Rime Island is located in Wula Street Manchu Town, Longtan District, Jilin City, Jilin Province. Situated in the middle of the Songhua River, this small island is about 35 kilometers from the city center. It is renowned both at home and abroad for its thick, long-lasting rime and beautifully shaped frosted trees. It is celebrated as one of the "Four Great Natural Wonders of China," alongside Guilin's landscape, Yunnan's Stone Forest, and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River.
The best viewing period is from late December to the end of February. The formation of rime requires extremely specific conditions — after the Songhua River flows through the Fengman Hydropower Station, the water emerges from tens of meters below the lake surface, maintaining a temperature of 4°C above zero. This keeps the river ice-free for over a hundred kilometers.
When the 4°C river water meets the minus 20–30°C winter air, vast clouds of mist rise from the river surface. On calm, windless days, this moisture condenses onto the branches along the banks, creating the spectacular "jade trees and silver flowers" rime view. The two main viewing spots on the island are Hantun and Zengtong Village, with locals saying: "For the best rime, go to Zengtong."

What Visitors Love About It
Core highlight – "Beautiful as a fairyland." Almost all positive reviews mention the stunning beauty of the rime. When the trees are draped in silver-white frost and the river mist drifts across the landscape, every photo looks like a masterpiece. The soft light between 7 and 9 in the morning is the most photogenic — at sunrise, when the morning glow tints the icy crystals, visitors describe it as "a moment too beautiful to breathe."
The "Rime Morning Report" is your lifesaver. Since rime formation depends on such specific conditions, whether you get to see it at all is largely a matter of luck. Every morning around 6:00 AM, the local tourism authority releases a "Rime Index" via their official WeChat account. Three stars or above means it's worth going — five stars means perfect conditions. Experienced visitors all advise: always check the forecast before heading out, or you might make the trip for nothing.
Rime Index & Viewing Tips
