Pingyao Ancient City is located in Jinzhong, Shanxi Province. It was first built during the Western Zhou Dynasty (827–782 BC) and was expanded in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty. It is the best-preserved ancient county-town in China and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
What visitors appreciate most about Pingyao is its authentic ancient atmosphere and rich history. Walking along the 6-kilometer city wall with 3,000 battlements and 72 watchtowers — said to represent Confucius's 3,000 disciples and 72 sages — offers a unique connection to the past. The well-preserved county government office, temples, and former banks provide a fascinating glimpse into traditional Chinese urban life. Many visitors also enjoy exploring the nearby Shuanglin Temple, home to over 2,000 ancient painted sculptures, often called a "treasure house of colored sculpture art".
However, some visitors find the commercialization overwhelming — the main streets are packed with souvenir shops, vinegar stores, and photo studios, making it feel less like a historical site and more like a shopping mall. Crowds and electric carts in narrow alleys can also affect the experience. For a more peaceful visit, go early in the morning or explore the quieter back lanes away from the main streets.

A Story: The "Turtle City" Legend
The turtle shape of Pingyao is no coincidence. Legend says that after the Great Flood, the legendary Emperor Shun ordered the construction of a city where a golden turtle came ashore and stopped. Since the turtle was a symbol of longevity and good fortune, the city was built to resemble it, with six gates representing the turtle's head, tail, and four legs. The locals even deliberately bent one of the "back legs" — the lower east gate — to stop the turtle from crawling away. And it seems to have worked: the city has stood for over 2,700 years.
